Teachers , in
general , should become more devoted towards their students and their problems.
Teachers are, in a large measure the custodians of student’s time and, therefore,
they must give the students their money and times’ worth. If one has accepted
the responsibility to teach, he should consider teaching as a HELPING
profession in which the interests and needs of the students are uppermost in
his mind.Hence teachers should be more responsive to students’ needs without
considering working with them to be an encroachment upon their valuable time.
The teacher
can be instrumental in how a learner reacts to a subject matter. In order to be
effective, the teacher should prepare, organize, and present subject matter
content;he or she should diagnose every learning problem and be ready to assist
in solving them. Furthermore he should correct the confused, arouse the
learner’s interest, motivate and challenge them and be able to update and
evaluate the syllabus.Teaching should be directed or related to what prevails
outside the classroom.Essentially, teachers should guide their pupils to
realize the importance of their learning towards a broader global situation. It
is important that teachers should instill into their students the problems and
needs of the world, develop in them the competence necessary to perform outside
the classroom, cause them to channel their skills to the needs of the society,
and cultivate the desire to help in solving the problems confronting mankind in
today’s world.
In other
words, teachers must strive to provide the kind of educational experiences
which will open the eyes of the students to perceive the patterns of things in
the world. In doing so, they must seek to stimulate the minds of the students
or learners so that they can attain their life’s goal and ambitions.Apparently,
without proper guidance towards self-development,the learner can remain
immature indefinitely. Thus, it is absolutely the responsibility of the teacher
to assist the learner in knowing the tools of learning which will enable them
to become truly educated persons.
In the act of
teaching,a teacher sets the example which helps to mold the attitudes and
philosophies of his students. In effect, teachers’ attitudes and interests are
reflected in their students. Therefore setting a good example is an important
responsibility of a teacher. The relationship between a teacher and his or her
student may be compared with a torn dollar paper.Neither half is of much use
alone;instead the value of one-half depends upon the other .Both the teacher
and his student are partners in a common endeavor; hence, the teacher’s
influence should not terminate whenever the class is completed. The imprint of a
teacher who sets a good example will be projected through the student.
In the final
analysis, a good teacher does not set himself above his students; he does so
only in his teaching responsibilities. In addition, an effective teacher
continuously attempts to improve his usefulness to his students and society by
engaging in library study, attending professional meetings, collaborating with
his colleagues In matters affecting educational and professional growth, traveling, and conducting experiments which deal mainly with teaching problems
in order to ensue maximum learning.
Finally,it is
the responsibility of every teacher to know his subject thoroughly, to show
appreciation towards his students, and to posses a willingness to work
hard.Undoubtedly, any teacher possessing these attributes will surely succeed in
his teaching assignment, provided he or she follows the procedure in most good
teaching.
