HOW A COOPERATING TEACHER SHOULD GUIDE A STUDENT TEACHER.


   

The class teacher or cooperating teachers whose classes are used by the student teachers should be competent and experienced classroom teachers. They should be willing to work with the student teachers and should have such personal qualities that are worthy of emulation.In addition, there are other guidelines which the cooperating teacher should adopt in order to ensure a smooth working relationship with the student teacher. Below are some of these  guides:
-He should brief the student teacher about his class and program.
-He should start the student teacher slowly and gradually increase his teaching load and confidence.
-The student teacher be allowed to select his teaching subjects from areas in which he feels confident provided they are to be covered in the syllabus.
-If possible, the student teacher should be provided with the opportunity to concentrate his teaching in one class for the duration of the teaching practice.He or she should organize the course, teach the lessons, and evaluate the students.
-He should assist the student teacher in locating references,providing hints for good teaching and suggestions for lesson plans and audio-visual aids.
-If need be,he may demonstrate good methods of teaching .
-He should critique the student teacher preferably once in a day,but usually as often as he deems fit especially during the first half of the student teaching experience.
-He should not add any additional activities just because the availability of a student teacher.This may render the student teacher ineffective.
-Develop the habit of constantly following up their work when they begin teaching.This could be very helpful to the student teacher.The student teacher should be evaluated as fairly and completely as possible.
  These are some of the guides that an experienced teacher can can do to help a student teacher succeed in this challenging task called teaching practice.
