Humanity is faced with the problem of security both at the individual, community, and international level. At the time of Jesus,Palestine was under Roman Colonial rule.There was a longing for a liberator for the jews for they felt unsecured and estranged in the presence of a dominant foreign power.This brought much hardships and dangers.
Jesus was gladly accepted by the common Jewish people as the expected savior and liberator.The Messiah from God, but his new found popularity was to suffer as the teachings became difficult for the followers.As a result, many of the crowd fell back.However, his close followers kept on with him.The question "you do not want to go away also, do you(John 6:67-68)? is addressed to them.The close followers were mostly made of common people especially former fishermen (Mt.4:18-22), (Lk.5:1-11).
It could be that these men had their own wants and expectations, which could even be at variance with the intention of Jesus.Is this different from today's followers of Jesus?. There is always a price to pay when we choose to follow Jesus.The cost may vary from us, losing physical home,departing from loved ones,experience of insecurity and even danger from death Lk.9:57-62.
The security that Jesus provides goes beyond the earthly security we might be seeking.Jesus comes with the Heavenly Angels.From Him and a host of heaven,we can have a genuine guarantee against any form of insecurity homelessness and peril (Psalm 91:11).
Genuine Faith Conquers all. There is no lasting peace and security as well as any permanent home on earth , but with Jesus Christ our lord,we can be sure of a lasting home both here and in the world to come.
