HOW TO MULTIPLY OR DIVIDE DIRECTED NUMBERS

As defined above, we already know what a directed number is.You will learn some of the simple rules used to multiply or divide directed numbers.
1) MULTIPLICATION OF DIRECTED NUMBERS.
Here, there are also two rules depending on the signs of the numbers.
i)-When two numbers to be numbers to be multiplied have the same sign,the answer is positive.
    eg. a) -5× -4= +20
         b) +5×+4=+20
In general; - × - =+ve
                 +× += +ve
ii)- When two numbers to be multiplied have different signs, the answer is always negative.
    eg, a) 4× -2= -8
          b)-4 × 2=-8
In general; + × - = - ve
                 -  × + = -ve

 2) DIVISION OF DIRECTED NUMBERS. When dividing directed numbers, the rules are the same as in multiplication.
   i)-When two numbers to be divided have the same sign, the answer is positive.
       eg. a) -6÷ -3 = ₊2
             b) -20 ÷ -4 =₊5
             c) ₊20 ÷ ₊4 = ₊5
To generalize; ₋ ÷ ₋ = ₊ve
                      ₊ ÷ ₊ = ₊ve
  ii)- When the numbers to be divided have different signs, the answer is negative.
       eg a)  ₋6÷₊3 =₋2
            b)  20÷-4=-5
            c)  ₋35÷10=₋3.5
To generalize; ₋ ÷ ₊ =₋ve
                      ₊ ÷ ₋ = ₋ve
